You are one of Professor Pugnacious’ prize pupils, a precocious prodigy of a Victorian adventurer. You must train yourself and acquire incredible Steampunk gadgetry to defeat the hordes of Gothic horrors that infest the Earth, and to foil your rivals in the process! This is a fast paced, tactical deckbuilding card game for 2-4 players.
You can read our blog about the development of Professor Pugnacious, or check out its BoardGame Geek Page. The Kickstarter was wildly successful. Thank you for all your help!
Professor Pugnacious’ Portfolio of Perils, Pugilism, and Perfidy-the Card Game of Victorian Combat pits Steampunk Heroes against Gothic Horrors in a fight to be the greatest monster hunter in the world-both by defeating your Adversaries, the creatures themselves, and by foiling your rivals-the other players.
You take on the role of one of Professor Pugnacious’ prize pupils. You and your rivals set out not merely to rid the world of the horrors that infect it, but to do so better than anyone else – whether that means sabotaging your classmate’s equipment, stealing another’s invention idea, or even forming alliances and working together to foil a more powerful rival.
Professor Pugnacious is a game for 2-4 players.
Turns are taken simultaneously, and have four phases: Play Cards, Buy Cards, Combat, and Recovery. Cards give you Skill, which you use to buy cards; Fight, which you use to defeat adversaries; Failure, which you use to foil the other players’ plans; Draw, which gives you more cards, and a whole host of special abilities.
On a turn, you’ll play cards, use their special abilities, buy cards, pick an Adversary to fight, negotiate how to distribute Failure with your rival players, and then reap the reward for winning or suffer the penalty for losing your fight. The Card Ring will rotate once, and the next turn will begin.
“The ‘Card Ring’ is brilliant! This mechanic is the gem of your design, and one I really like a lot. The choices one must make from their own queue, coupled with the impact of ‘shifting’ the cards, is very well done“ – Tox, Crits Happen
Professor Pugnacious has been awarded the Springboard Seal of Quality.
We’re confident you’ll love Professor Pugnacious because of the innovative mechanics, the immersive theme, and the extensive playtesting it’s undergone.
The mechanics were designed from the ground up to fill a space we saw lacking among deckbuilding games. We wanted something tactical – you can’t just plan out a grand strategy at the beginning, you have to make decisions every turn – fast paced – turns are taken simultaneously, so there’s nearly no waiting – and interactive – you can manipulate the Card Ring, which is where people buy their cards from, and you can assign Failure, so your opponents lose their fights. This means you need to make decisions that take into account what kinds of decks other people are building, and leads to a lot of political intrigue, as players bargain and backstab to avoid being made to fail and to trick and trap opponents.
The theme theme and style – well, just look at them. Andrea’s really put together something incredible. It’s not just the card art: the design of the cards and the box all pull you in to this strange world of Victoriana. But that’s not all! Each copy of the game will come with an mp3 of theme music composed by Brent Hengeveld. Scan the code, get it on your phone, and play it in the background during your game for an incredibly immersive experience. Oh what the heck, have it for free now. Enjoy his other music as well.

Here are some enemies you can fight:
This game has been very extensively playtested. Hundreds of man-hours, scores of games, dozens of playtesters on multiple continents have all ensured, through countless revisions, changes, major overhauls, and minor tweaks, that this game will be as good as it can be. Major thanks go out to former pro Magic: The Gathering player Zvi Mowshowitz, whose advice and assistance have been invaluable, and led to major changes to howtrashing and enemies are designed.
Here’s one example of a minor change we’ve made: when you get a reward for killing a monster, that comes into effect on the next turn. Some players were finding it difficult to remember all of the effects, so now we have these handsome tokens to help everyone remember.
